Towards the end of the 1990s Frank Touhey of Cheltenham, England mentioned to me a Billy Gorlt, who lead a big band in the area of Munich, Germany and who had produced a number of LPs and CDs. Although I had followed big band music since my childhood, I had never come across that name, not even after 1986 when I began producing and presenting beautiful big band sounds, our kind of music on RADIO THURGAU – RTG in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. I therefore sent some recordings of my recent programs on RTG and brief curriculum vitae. A few days later Billy Gorlt telephoned and greeted me with these words:

“My dear Max Wirz, when I read your curriculum vitae, I had to laugh out loud. We have something in common; we were both born on March 9^th.

During the ensuing telephone conversation Billy explained that on March 9^th, 1945, exactly on his 18^th birthday, he was taken POW (prisoner of war) by an American Army unit near Frankfurt, Main. That Lucky Day opened him a life with American Swing Music.

A few weeks after our first telephone contact, my wife Nelly and I drove to Germering to learn more about his life and career.

Billy tells his story

„After capture we were brought to a camp near Chalon sur Marne in France. A few weeks later, a large stage was built within our view and the same evening an American Band gave a concert. We could hear, but for lack of knowledge of English, we could not understand the announcements. This army band turned out to be an orchestra of about 18 musicians and one girl singer. By questioning our guards we learned that it was the American Band Of The Allied Expeditionary Forces (*2) and that the first piece they played was „Moonlight Serenade“. It was music we had never heard before. It came from another star. Each title differed extremely from the one played before. For the first time in my life I heard a clarinet being played above the alto saxophone. Then they played a melody which dumbfounded me; four trombones took over the function of the rhythm group.

Sollte es Taktik gewesen sein, was natürlich ein Maß an Intelligenz
voraussetzen würde, das man den Akteuren im Innenministerium schwer
zutraut, dann war sie jedenfalls nicht schlecht: Am heißesten Tag des
Jahres werden acht der hauptsächlich aus Pakistan stammenden
Asylbewerber festgenommen...

der Copacabana

Am Strand von Rio de Janeiro hat Papst Franziskus Hunderttausende
junge Katholiken auf dem traditionellen Kreuzweg begleitet. Auf das
Spektakel folgte eine politische Rede: Darin sprach der Papst das Leid
vieler Jugendlicher in Brasilien an.

Mit leicht übertriebenen Gesten und dank Kompressoren süßlich 
verzerrter Stimme treten eine Frau nach der anderen auf die Bühne und 
legen Zeugnis ab, an Christus den Erlöser. Kinder, die ganz in weiß als 
Engel posieren sind auch dabei.

Insgesamt 280 Schauspieler und Laiendarsteller haben an der 
Copacabana den Kreuzweg nachgespielt. In vierzehn Stationen zeigen 
sie das Leiden und Sterben Jesu - von der Verurteilung durch Pontius 
Pilatus bis zur Kreuzigung und Grablegung.

Hi there country music fans!

Follow me back to the times of Western and Country Music that was produced prior to 1987. You will hear music taken off long playing records, pressed from the 1940s to 1970^th as well as burned on CDs available as from the mid-eighties.

In June of 1987 I took part in a conference on pension plans for multinational companies at the Saddlebrook Resort, Tampa, Florida. One week later I had a business appointment at FEDEX Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. I took advantage of the free days to drive from Tampa via Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Valdosta, Macon, Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Nashville to Memphis. En route I stopped in Chattanooga and Nashville. There in the Country Music Capital of the World and Music City USA I met Tom Bryant, (now retired) Production Manager of WSM AM RADIO 650, Nashville.

A year prior to this trip I had begun producing and presenting radio programs for RADIO THURGAU, a privately owned local radio station in Frauenfeld, Switzerland and was eager to expand my knowledge on American Music. In particular I wanted to find out the difference between Western Music and Country Music... (further to the audio stream ...)

Die Vereinigung der Prostituierten im Bundesstaat Minas Gerais,
“Aspromig“, bietet den Prostituierten in Belo Horizonte kostenlose
Schnellkurse für Englisch, Spanisch und Französisch an. Ziel ist es, den als
Prostituierten arbeitenden Frauen so umfangreiche Sprachkenntnisse zu
vermitteln, dass diese geringere sprachliche Barrieren mit ausländischen
Freiern haben. 



Hierbei steht nicht nur das alltägliche Vokabular auf dem Lehrplan, 
sondern auch das technische Sex-Vokabular. Schließlich sollen die 
Prostituierten nach Beendigung der Kurse in der Lage sein, 
Preisverhandlungen zu führen und mit den Freiern über deren Wünsche 
und Fetische zu sprechen. Initiiert wurden diese Sprachkurse im Hinblick 
auf die anstehende Fußball-WM.

Als Klassenräume dienen die Räumlichkeiten einer Vereinigung von 
Homosexuellen und Transsexuellen. Die Sprachlehrer unterrichten 
ehrenamtlich.
